With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s essential to remember that it can be a challenging time for some people. Christmas means different things to different people and it is important to respect these differences. Not everyone celebrates the same way as you or your family. It’s easy to get swept up in the frenzy that accompanies the season and to put pressure on yourself to manage too much. The holiday season is a time to reflect on the past year and focus on the year ahead.

Here, AccessEAP offers some helpful tips on how to ensure a calm, stress-free holiday season.

1. Enjoy some me time

Take some time for yourself over the holidays to rest, relax and regenerate. Christmas is a very busy time of year and if you don’t enjoy some time for yourself, it can feel not much like a holiday at all. Focus on priorities and try not to do much or you can end up feeling worn out.

2. Spend time with loved ones

Try not to get caught up in the commercial emphasis on gifts over the holiday season. The gifts that can’t be bought are often the most valued and spending time with loved ones is far more important than giving or receiving gifts.

3. Embrace differences

Be mindful of different cultures and religions and remember that we all celebrate Christmas in our own way. It’s an opportunity for us all to embrace difference and exercise respect and tolerance.

4. Have fun

Never underestimate the power of a good laugh with friends and family. Having fun releases a lot of feel good hormones, something we can forget to do over the holidays.

5. Don’t be afraid to say no

People feel pressure to get everything done before Christmas. If you start to feel overloaded, just say no. Don’t be afraid to push tasks to January to ensure you get plenty of time to put your feet up and relax.

6. Look out for others

Christmas can be a difficult time for some people. Spend time with those less fortunate and reach out and include those spending Christmas away from family.

7. Ask for help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. It’s important to reach out to friends or family if you feel you can’t manage everything yourself.
